Confined Space Standby Team
Confined Space Standby Team
A Confined Space Rescue Team is a team of trained personnel that provides rescue services and rescue equipment during a planned entry into a permit required confined space such as a boiler, sewer, tunnel, chemical tank, or process vessel.
- Rescue services for planned permit required confined space entry
- Emergency retrieval systems, supplied air units, PPE, and medical trauma kits
- Monitoring of activities inside and outside the confined space to support safe entry
Planned Confined Space Entry Support
Confined Space Rescue Services for Permit Required Spaces
A Confined Space Rescue Team provides rescue services and rescue equipment during planned entry into permit required confined spaces such as boilers, sewers, tunnels, chemical tanks, and process vessels.
These teams provide emergency retrieval systems, supplied air units, personal protection equipment, and medical trauma kits for a potential rescue in IDHL atmospheres. The team also monitors all activities inside and outside the confined space to help ensure safe entry.
Many facilities find it more cost-effective to outsource these services as opposed to having an in-house team on the rare occasion an employee may need to enter a permit required confined space.
OSHA Rescue Team Requirements
When Does OSHA Require a Rescue Team?
If you have a Permit Required Confined Space at your facility, OSHA may require you to have a Rescue Team. The simplest way to evaluate the need is to ask whether a person inside the space could be removed safely without anyone entering the space.
When a Rescue Team Is Required
- When your facility has a Permit Required Confined Space
- When an unconscious entrant could not be safely removed without entering the space
- When a confined space has the potential for entrapment or engulfment
- When an entrant cannot be safely removed without rescue support
Fire Department vs Standby Confined Space Rescue
- A Confined Space Rescue Team can be hired on-site during planned confined space entry
- A team may also be on standby and able to respond in a timely manner
- On-site teams are required for hazardous IDLH atmospheres that cannot be removed with forced air ventilation
- Standby rescue teams must be close enough to respond in a timely manner, generally less than 5 minutes away
