The 6 Essential CPR Steps
When someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, acting quickly is critical. Follow these CPR steps to provide effective assistance:
- Check for Safety: Ensure the area is safe for you and the victim before proceeding.
- Assess the Victim: Tap the person’s shoulder and loudly ask, “Are you okay?” If they don’t respond, they may need CPR.
- Call for Help: Dial 911 or ask someone nearby to call. If available, request an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Start Chest Compressions:
- Place the heel of one hand on the center of the victim’s chest.
- Place your other hand on top and interlock your fingers.
- Push hard and fast, compressing the chest at least 2 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
- Give Rescue Breaths (if trained):
- Tilt the victim’s head back and lift their chin.
- Pinch their nose shut, take a normal breath, and make a seal over their mouth.
- Give two breaths, watching for the chest to rise.
- Continue Until Help Arrives: Perform cycles of 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths until professional help takes over or the person shows signs of recovery.
